- Australians, (then Americans) on average have the largest carbon footprint in the world. Basically, this is because of our huge dependence on fossil fuel and most Australians have ginormous homes compared with the rest of the world.
- Imagine if the rest of the world were the same as us- we would need 7 planets worth of resources to sustain us! The developed countries have created the current level of CO2 in the atmosphere, therefore it is unfair to treat the developing countries the same.
- Our carbon footprint (or carbon pollution) is measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) which comes mostly from the burning of fossils fuel in which carbon is released into atmosphere.Carbon footprints can be measured for individuals, families, organizations and countries. These footprints are made up from almost every activity in our daily lives. Obvious usage is electricity, car and air travel. The indirect measurements or embodied carbon emissions come from the growing, manufacturing and transport of all our ‘things’ we have in our life- food, clothes, furniture, appliances, books, nearly everything in our lives. Some activities have none- ie walking on the beach, riding a bike (however the bike has embodied carbon emissions in it’s manufacture). Gets complicated.
- In the future items purchased will have its carbon footprint on the label and we will have the choice whether to buy it or not. Some products have more environmental impact than others.
- The aim of the game is to reduce your carbon footprint as much as you can by making certain lifestyle choices, then to neutralize or 'zero your carbon' footprint with the purchase of carbon credits.
