10. CONSERVE - our existing forest, can you imagine if we stopped worldwide logging of all forests! This would contribute substantially to the slowing down of climate change. Trees take out of the air- CO2- what we put in. Why would you get rid of something that does that. Hmm.
TREES! Big beautiful shady trees. We can:
Individually and as a family or group of friends- plant more trees.
Join groups like Landcare to collectively help with re-vegetation.
Farmers are re-vegetating to help fight salinity and can now claim carbon credits for doing so with groups like Greenfleet, Carbon Smart and CO2 Australia. Farmers who have already done this to date should be compensated by the government as they have helped meet the Kyoto target. To help with water retention while revegetating a great method is Natural Sequence Farming. This is where natural ecosystems can be restored- water is retained and naturally filtered.
We can all support and purchase timber products made from plantation wood or recycled wood.
We can all support the preservation of all old- growth forests all around the world. These are huge carbon sinks. ( At this stage theretention of forests to sequester carbon is not included in Kyotoand it should be.) There are many other incredible benefits including heritage factor, biodiversity- they are pristine places for the futures. These forests are in East Africa, South America and Asia to name the main ones. Even the smallest plot of forest amongst a built up area has huge benefits. Yes, we are tree huggers!
Important question to ask ourselves: Why would you clear rain-forest to plant crops (palm oil) for biofuels to run cars? - please think about this when purchasing an alternate fuel vehicle. Seems nonsensical, stupid and corrupt. Palm oil is also a cheap ingredient in cosmetics, foods and soaps. So when purchasing products that may contain palm oil (may only be labeled vegetable oil) we need to see clearly "palm oil free" or sustainable palm oil. Please go to the next page to learn about the inhabitants of these forests.
