After much deliberation about attending this conference, trying to justify my flight down to Sydney- I decided to attend the "Going Carbon Neutral and Beyond " conference presented by Ethical Investor. As the Executive Director Michael Walsh said, take every possible opportunity to network and take full advantage of the day as these meeting become more important and the issue of travel is highlighted.
Well it was fabulous, confirming all my hopes and beliefs that business are onto it! Yes some, but not all. These included some big names ANZ, IAG, Origin, Lend Lease, Intrepid Travel and the international green carpet people- Interface Flor. These companies believe they will be in a good position when carbon trading comes into play with regards to the documentation and reduction of their carbon emissions.
However some companies still have no idea where to start and prefer to hold off until there is more direction from the government! Well it appears the former is a better option.
My good friends at The Carbon Reduction Institute calculated and offset the carbon emissions of the whole conference including food and travel of participants to the conference and then gave an impressive speech on 'how to'.
My take home messages were:
- Transparency (thorough documentation available) means honesty and not keeping dark secrets- all will be revealed.
- When doing business use other people and businesses who have a climate change policy and who are working towards carbon neutrality in turn reducing your carbon footprint.
