I love shopping. Don't you?
Is it the newness? Is it the aesthetics, the packaging, the smell? Do we feel happier with that new haircut, that new cream? La this. La that. Yes we do. Maybe it is just fundamental grooming to attract the opposite sex. Some say we are trying to fill our spiritual void with stuff to pack around us because we are frightened of death. Umm. Maybe?
However we are the gatherers, the guys are the hunters. So let's gather, let's search for that bargain, that treasure- the latest, the cheapest, the best quality, the most ethical - The Truth!
- We read labels, we read ingredients- preservatives, additives, artificial colors, no added sugar…. etc. We think about animal testing, fair trade, made in where, no child labor, no conflict diamonds, palm oil free and genetically engineered. Recycled packaging or no packaging. No plastic bags. Is it rain-forest timber or plantation timber?
- We are becoming more ethical in our thinking when it comes to purchases. I don't feel guilt, I think it's just fair and responsible. Just add a few more- is this product environmentally friendly/ or is this product climate neutral? Is it biodegradable or recyclable? How much greenhouse gas has this product emitted in the long journey to us?
- By shopping online and having the product delivered to your door will cut down on your carbon emissions- check out Ebay.
- For a big company directory particularly American companies of which there are a lot here. Go to Climate Counts for clear ratings on these. Electronics are the big ones. They are given a score out of 100. Also a Stuck, Starting or Striding score. You can download a pocket guide to put in your wallet to take shopping. Remember who you choose to spend money at sends a direct and precise message to the market.
