Shopping Bags

ZYC are searching for the Best shopping bag with the Highest Green Cred. I found this one - hot from London where the opening launch of these bags sold out in hours. They are limited edition Anya Hindmarch, "I'm NOT A Plastic bag". Rare collectibles to create a frenzy and demand which they certainly did. They look good, sending a great message and are of good quality- though not big enough for groceries.

At the time local Sainsbury shops- Tesco and Waitrose took out full page adds to proclaim their new plastic bag policies. Marks and Spencer are now charging for plastic bags in some stores. Tesco are giving loyalty points for those not using plastic bags. If trends can create awareness then so be it- that shopping bag has got to look good. You can have it all- so ZYC are searching for the highest green cred. bag.

Green Credentials from the bag itself and the business operations. So the bag needs to be:

  • reusable,
  • good quality and
  • long-lasting,
  • look fantastic,
  • made from organic fabric or re-purposed fabric (has been used before),
  • ethically made and at the end of it's life be biodegradable or recyclable.
A few have come close to it.
  • The makers need to be working on a climate change policy- cutting greenhouse gases and possibly have a target or goal for carbon neutrality.
Yes, we are demanding or is it high expectations, maybe it is all about effort!

And what's happening here? Well I have noticed more and more shops using biodegradable bags including Video Ezy and my local electronics shop- Leading Edge. The big supermarkets are still using plastic bags, however some are now recyclable. Woolies have a bin at the front of the shop to put old bags in- getting there. They have the reusable green ones too. There are so many shops still to get rid of those nasty plastic ones, but of course if you carry your hip tote with you- just refuse and drop a little hint!
  • There is small town in NSW that has completely banned bags- I'll find out and get back to you. How good is that- started by the guy in the bakery.
  • Local councils everywhere are starting no bag policies.
  • One more thing- there are biodegradable bags and there are biodegradable bags- yes, different levels of biodegradability. Too much!                                                              More info later.
